58th UN General Assembly to overcome consequences of Iraqi crisis

Participants in the 58th UN General Assembly in New York will have to overcome consequences of the Iraqi crisis, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Fedotov told RIA Novosti on Thursday.

"Large-scale work aimed to jointly overcome the negative consequences of the Iraqi crisis and to consolidate the UN central role in world affairs in the interests of the world community lies ahead," Fedotov said.

According to him, "it is necessary to take further efforts on the UN modernisation collective mechanisms of which should serve a real alternative to unilateral approaches in world affairs." The diplomat believes that this process should not damage the UN Charter and improve the existing or create new mechanisms on the basis of generally acceptable coordinated agreements.

"Russian President Vladimir Putin's forthcoming address at the UN General Assembly evidences the importance of the 58th session for Russia. The wide routine programme of the Russian President and foreign minister will contribute to this notable event," Fedotov added.
