Extradited Chechens take Russia and Georgia to International Human Rights Court

The International Court for Human Rights in Strasburg is scheduled to decide whether or not to review the suits of five of thirteen Chechens who were detained in Georgia in August 2002 for illegal crossing of the Georgian-Russian border with weapons in their hands. The Georgian Justice Ministry told Rosbalt that the suits against Russia and Georgia were filed by lawyers representing five Chechens, who were handed over from Georgia to Russia on October 4, 2002.

Their lawyers accuse the Russian Attorney General of the illegal extradition and falsification of accusatory material and Georgia in the illegal transfer of the Chechens to Russia. If the suits are reviewed and the case won by the Chechens, Georgia and Russia will have to pay the Chechens compensation.
