The representative of the United States at the six-sided negotiations in Beijing demanded on Wednesday that Beijing should give up its nuclear programme. Taking party in these negotiations are the delegations from China, the DPRK, the Republic of Korea, Russia, the USA and Japan.
As RIA Novosti was told by a source attending the negotiations, the speech of the head of the American delegation, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific Ocean, lasted for more than fifty minutes.
In his turn, the head of the North Korean delegation said that the DPRK was not creating nuclear weapons. He also demanded the conclusion of a non-aggression treaty with the USA.
At the same time the Pyongyang central newspaper Nodom Shimbun on Wednesday published an editorial in which it called upon the USA not to bring pressure to bear on the DPRK with the aim of making it give up its "weapons of deterrence." The Pyongyang representative at the negotiations in Beijing also said that in case of the continuation of the pressure by the USA on the DPRK, Pyongyang could increase its possibilities of deterrence.
At the present time bilateral contacts continue between all the participants in the negotiations, including the United States and the DPRK. All the participants in the six-sided negotiations have already come out for settling the nuclear problem of the DPRK by peaceful means, through negotiations.
The main task, believe the diplomats taking part in the negotiations, is to overcome the confrontation between the USA and the DPRK, to achieve the softening of their positions, and to move ahead.
