The first unit of the Ukrainian peacekeeping contingent crossed the Kuwaiti-Iraqi border yesterday. As a Rosbalt correspondent was informed by the press office of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry, the unit included 83 tanks and other vehicles.
Three more Ukrainian units will be deployed in Iraq over the next two days. A subdivision of the Ukrainian fifth infantry brigade was redeployed to Kuwait by August 10. Two days earlier, on August 8, a Turkish sea ferry delivered the Ukrainian contingent all the necessary technical equipment needed for its peacekeeping mission. 1,660 Ukrainian soldiers will be deployed in Iraq in total. The personnel of the Ukrainian fifth infantry brigade will begin operations by September 1.
