The Caspian's ecological safety demands immediate adoption of convention

On Saturday, Mehdi Safari, special representative of the Iranian foreign ministry on the Caspian problems and former ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Moscow stated that Iran considered it extremely important and mandatory to have the convention on the environmental protection of the Caspian Sea signed by all the five littoral states (Russia, Iran, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan).

He stated that the solution of marine ecological problems was very important, and Iran was hopeful that the meeting of the working group on environmental issues scheduled for October would near the signing of the document.

While talking about the legal status of the Caspian Sea, Safari mentioned that the ultimate objective of the work continued to be carried out to find a mutually acceptable solution of this problem was to take into account the interests of each of the littoral states.

The special representative of the Iranian foreign ministry also reported that Iran supported the Russian proposal to hold a meeting of the special working group on Caspian matters at the level of foreign ministers of littoral states.
