Georgian President: No deadlock in situation around rebellious Abkhazia

Eduard Shevardnadze does not believe the Abkhaz situation to be hopeless (Abkhazia is a self-proclaimed republic in the north-west of Georgia).

The Georgian president warned Georgian politicians against jumping to conclusions in connection with navigation resumed between the Russian seaport of Sochi and Sukhumi, the capital of Abkhazia.

At the meeting of the UN Secretary General's group of friends on Georgia, which took place in Geneva on July 21st-22nd, all the initiatives, proposed and endorsed by the Russian and Georgian presidents at their meeting in Sochi, were approved of as meeting refugees' interests, the president said.

At the Sochi meeting the Russian and Georgian presidents reached an agreement to coordinate the process of returning Georgian refugees to Abkhazia's Gali region with the resumption of the Sochi-Sukhumi-Tbilisi railway communication and reconstruction of the Inguri hydro-electric plant.
