UN mission not to resume patrolling of Kodori Gorge

The mission of UN military observers is not to resume patrolling of the Kodori Gorge yet.

After the kidnapping of several mission officials we should analyse the situation and take a decision on further patrolling the Kodori Gorge," Heidi Tagliavini, UN Secretary-General's special envoy to Georgia, told a press conference in Tbilisi.

According to her, the UN mission is not to estimate the activities of the collective peacekeeping forces of the Commonwealth of Independent States in the zone of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict (Abkhazia is a self-proclaimed republic in Georgian territory).

In spite of the kidnapping incident, the UN mission in Georgia does not consider the formation of an additional post of peacekeepers in the Kodori Gorge.

The additional post in the gorge will be open if the Abkhaz and Georgian sides achieve an agreement on this issue, Tagliavini said.
