Russian Foreign Ministry urges Colombian authorities to ensure Russian citizens' safety

The Russian foreign ministry has urged Colombian authorities to take measures to ensure safety of Russian citizens in Colombia in the wake of attacks on a Russian diplomat and his spouse.

The Russian side expects the Colombian competent authorities to take prompt steps to ensure proper safety or Russian diplomats and other Russian citizens working in this country, as well as promt and efficient measures to trace and make the criminals answerable, reads a press release.

Reports from Colombia say on 24 May the second secretary of the Russian embassy in Columbia, A.V.Sadikov, and his wife were attacked by armed robbers. Both Russians were wounded in the legs. They have been discharged from hospital and are staying at home under supervision of the embassy's doctor.

Santos Calderon, Colombia's vice-president, and foreign minister Barco Isakson have phoned the embassy to express their sympathies.
