Supporters of Al-Najaf religious school stage protest in Baghdad

On Thursday, supporters of a religious school in al-Najaf staged a protest in Baghdad.

The protesters came out against the foreign administration in Iraq urging the new Iraqi authorities to take heed of the interests of the majority of the population.

"We do not want to undermine the role of the Iraqi opposition abroad," a representative of the al-Najaf religious school told RIA Novosti, "yet, the true opposition was here, inside Iraq. Shiites make 75 per cent of the Iraqi people. There is no allowing the oppressed to become victims again." The al-Najaf school which represents a majority of Iraqi Shiites wants to be given "a significant role" within the new Iraqi government. "We oppose a government which would not take the rights of the majority into consideration." According to RIA Novosti's source, there are forces, including the US occupational command, which deny the school any role in Iraqi politics. He said that the US hampers the return to from Iran to Iraq of a number of the al-Najaf school's representatives.
