Moldova considers GUUAM perspectives obscure

Moldavian president Vladimir Voronin considers activities of the GUUAM regional organization which was set up by the Ukrainian and Georgian presidents, not concrete and is pessimistic about the coming summit in Yalta, he said in an exclusive interview with a RIA Novosti correspondent on Thursday.

Besides these countries GUUAM also includes Azerbaijan. Uzbekistan has suspended its membership in the organization.

"Perspectives of the GUUAM activities are obscure and hardly visible," the Moldavian president believes.. He intends to raise the question of Moldova's role and place in the GUUAM, as well as of the organization's perspectives at the Yalta summit. "I am going to Yalta in a pessimistic mood. There is a lot of talk around the GUUAM, but there has been no exact decisions nor moves," Voronin said.

"So far we have not seen fulfillment of the exact goals the organization was set up for. These are a transnational corridor for delivering oil and gas to Europe and a transport corridor, the so-called Silk way," the president stressed. "Now the GUUAM is digressing to considering agreements signed and to be fulfilled within the CIS framework," he believes.

Most importantly, "the GUUAM states' plans are mainly fulfilled through bilateral relations between these states", Voronin pointed out. "In general, the GUUAM activities are not concrete. Those who were its initiators did not think it over and work it out properly," he said.

"I do not expect any breakthrough from the Yalta meeting, as the agenda itself does not envisage such," the president concluded.
