11 possible solutions to Kaliningrad problem discussed in St. Petersburg

Meeting in St. Petersburg, the Russian president's plenipotentiary to the Northwestern Federal District Viktor Cherkesov and co-Chairman of the Council of the Institute East-West, ex-President of Finland Martti Ahtisaari discussed "up to 11 different solutions to the Kaliningrad problem." The transport corridor solution, however, wasn't discussed because Lithuania is dead set against it, said the ex-president, adding that the variants considered included transit from Russia to Kaliningrad and back via the Baltic states. The transit would not include customs control and would be similar to that between Finland and Estonia via the territory of the Leningrad region, he said.

In the course of the meeting, the ex-Finnish president expressed a conviction that the sides would manage to find a "practical solution to the Kaliningrad problem in the light of the European Union's enlargement to the East."
