Chinese, Russian lawenforcement agencies step up contacts

China's and Russia's law enforcement agencies have established good partnerly relations, Oleg Chernov, Deputy Secretary of Russia's Security Council, said ahead of an official visit to China Russian Security Council Secretary Vladimir Rushailo will start on July 15.

Among other things, the two countries' law enforcers are particularly active in the anti-terrorist cause. They have launched an intense information exchange and are working to open a regional anti-terror centre of the Schanghai Cooperation Organization to be based in Bishkek, recalled the Russian security official.

Vladimir Rushailo's visit is going to cement what the two countries have achieved coordinating their efforts in the international arena, according to Mr Chernov. Among the delegates being led by Mr Rushailo is Marshal Igor Sergeyev, the president's strategic stability adviser.

To dominate the Chinese visit agenda is a range of issues related to Russia-NATO relationships, their cooperation prospects, in the anti-terrorist direction and within the Group of Eight, said Mr Chernov.

It is the two countries' leaders who set the pace of bilateral cooperation, meeting no less than 3 to 4 times a year, Mr Chernov emphasised and reported on a Beijing visit President Vladimir Putin of Russia is scheduled to make in late 2002.

When touching upon the Asian developments, Mr Chernov praised China's contacts with Pakistan and India's positive reaction to them. "We come up in favour of improving relations between the parties to the conflict and other countries involved," said the Russian official pointing to positive tendencies in the above process.
