Representatives of Russia's Foreign Ministry and of UN Secretary General meet in Georgia

State Secretary and First Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Valery Loshchinin and special representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations for Georgia Heidi Tagliavini discussed the situation with the prolongation of the term of the presence of the Collective Peacekeeping Forces of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in Abkhazia (a self-proclaimed republic in the territory of Georgia).

As the report of the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation says, "the peacekeepers play a key role in ensuring the regime of non-resuming fire." In this way, "they are making an important contribution to the creation of conditions for conducting negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the problems between Tbilisi and Sukhumi," pointed out the Russian Foreign Ministry.

During this conversation Heidi Tagliavini was also "informed about the efforts of Russia for nearing the positions of the Georgian and Abkhazian sides and for the resumption of a political dialogue between them," the document points out.

At the end of the meeting the sides "have agreed that a close cooperation that has arisen between the Russian Foreign Ministry and the United Nations Mission for Georgia will continue," says the concluding report.
