Russia must complete transferring installations to Vietnamese side in Camranh

On Monday, the entire work and all the formalities connected with Russia transferring the installations in the port of Camranh to the Vietnamese side must be completed.

As a RIA Novosti correspondent was told by the spokesman for the Foreign Ministry of Vietnam, all these procedures are going on in accordance with the earlier approved plan and will be finished in time.

On the basis of the inter-governmental agreement between the Soviet Union and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Camranh material-technological base for supplying the Soviet and then Russian Navy could function till 2004. But in the past few years, in the opinion of military specialists, the importance and the use of the base were practically brought to the minimum, and for this reason the Russian leadership took a decision to close the Camranh base before the appointed time.

Hanoi underscores that the port of Camranh will not be granted on lease to the Navy of one or another state but will be used in the interests of the social and economic development of the country. At the same time, ships of the Russian Navy can enter the Camranh port in case of necessity, upon notifying the Vietnamese authorities beforehand.
