Estonia and Russia restore waterborne traffic

An Estonian-Russian working conference on opening navigation on the border Chudskoye, Pskovskoye and Tyoploye Lakes is to be held in Tartu, the second largest city of Estonia.

At the end of last March head of the Transport Ministry of Russia Sergei Frank and his Estonian counterpart Liina Tonnison signed an agreement on restoration of the shipping on Chudskoye, Pskovskoye and Tyoploye Lakes between Estonian Tartu and Pskov in Russia, which was discontinued more than nine years ago.

In keeping with this document, during the active navigation the Tartu port can receive, during the first year from the day the agreement comes into force, up to 100,000 tons of different cargos and up to 3,000 passengers from Estonia, Russia and Finland. The Estonian and Russian sides have already exchanged the lists of their ships which may navigate the border lakes after shipping opens there.

A delegation of Estonia visited Moscow last May and finalized with the Russian side all the details of the agreement on the check-points on the Estonian-Russian border. The absence of such a document was the last obstacle to opening navigation on the border lakes.

The signing of the agreement on the check-points on the Estonian-Russian border will also take place on Tuesday, June 25, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia. From the Estonian side the document will be signed by head of the Estonian foreign-policy agency Kristiina Ojuland, and from the Russian side - by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Estonian Republic Konstantin Provalov. The document shall come into force from the day of its signing, which makes it possible to talk of the opening of shipping on the border water reservoirs already this year.
