Ivanov, Powell meet in Whistler

Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and US Secretary of State Colin Powell have met in Whistler, Canada, to discuss the upcoming meeting between the presidents of Russia and the USA, which is scheduled to take place in the framework of the G-8 summit in Kananaskis, Canada, a source in the Russian delegation reported on Thursday.

The conversation centered on fulfilment of agreements related to the military-and-political sphere, the ones that were reached at the Russia-US summit meetings in Moscow and St. Petersburg in late May.

According to the source, the sides emphasized the importance of ratifying the Treaty on Strategic Offensive Reductions as soon as possible. They also decided it was necessary to create a new mechanism for bilateral cooperation by setting up a consultative group responsible for strategic security issues.

The ministers exchanged opinions on further development of interaction in the anti-terrorist sphere. Going on to discuss international and regional problems, they stressed that both Russia and the USA intend to do everything possible to ease tension between India and Pakistan.

Further on, Ivanov and Powell considered the situation in the Mideast, deciding to continue joint and parallel efforts, including those in the framework of the group of four international intermediaries /Russia, the USA, the European Union and the United Nations/, to stop the Israeli-Palestinian confrontation and promote dialogue between the sides.
