About 30 states to take part in the summit Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia to be held in Alma-Ata

About 30 Asian states will be represented at the summit Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia, state secretary and foreign minister of Kazakhstan Kasymzhomart Tokayev told journalists on Wednesday.

According to him, taking part in the summit to be held in Alma-Ata (Kazakhstan) on June 4 will be Russian President Vladimir Putin, President of China Jiang Zemin, prime minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee, President of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf, President of Turkey Ahmed Sezer, President of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akayev, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rakhmonov, President of Mongolia Natsagiyn Bagabandi and vice-President of Iran Reza Aref.

UN Under-Secretary General Kieran Prendergast, Secretary General of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe Jan Kubis, and Deputy Secretary General of the League of the Arab States Adel will take part in the work of the forum as guests. In addition, Tokayev pointed out, the state observers are also expected to participate in the forum.

According to Tokayev, it is also envisaged to hold a series of bilateral meetings within the framework of the summit.

"The conference summit attracted great attention in the world in connection with the participation in it by the Prime Minister of India and the President of Pakistan, the heads of the two states whose relations at the present stage worry the whole world," the minister stressed.

He also pointed out that the foreign policy service of Kazakhstan "is getting ready to hold a meeting between the heads of India and Pakistan within the framework of the conference summit." "Kazakhstan supports the initiative of Russia to conduct such a meeting and expresses hope that the forthcoming talks will be of great importance for the normalisation of Indian-Pakistani relations," Tokayev emphasised.
