China hails Russia-U.S. start accord

An official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in Beijing that China welcomes the attainment of agreement between Russia and the United States on the reduction of strategic offensive arms. The principled agreement for deep-going curtailment of strategic offensive armaments opens the road for the two leaders' signing a relative treaty during a Russian-American summit meeting upcoming in Moscow in the end of May, said director Kung Qiang of the press department at the Chinese Foreign Ministry to a briefing for Chinese and foreign journalists. He stressed that Russia and the United States, which have the largest stockpiles of nuclear weapons, bear special responsibility for the promotion of the process of arms control. Russia and America, said the spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, should go on with reducing their nuclear arsenals and in this way providing a fresh impetus in the process of global disarmament.
