UK Football: Arsenal do the double

French manager Arsene Wenger celebrates his second double in charge of North Londoners Arsenal, who clinched victory with a 1-0 away win over Manchester United.

Arsene Wenger won his first double five years ago in his first season as Arsenal manager and went on to win the championship the following year. Four thirsty years later, he savoured the first taste of victory last Saturday with the 2-0 win over fellow Londoners Chelsea in the English FA Cup.

“We wanted there to be a shift of power,” said Wenger. “We wanted to bring the Premiership trophy back home”. He added that this time he appreciates winning the championship because four years of defeats have proved to him how hard it is.

Beating Manchester United at Old Trafford is no mean feat, coupled by the fact that Arsenal become the first side since Preston North End (in the nineteenth century) not to lose an away game all season. French striker Sylvain Wiltord scored the winning goal.

Arsene Wenger referred to the “great togetherness” of the team and declared that the whole team gets what it deserves.
