Georgia: We Never Refused Russian Military Aid

'It is not true that Russia offered Georgia military aid and Georgia refused,' announced Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Nino Burdjanadze at a press conference in St. Petersburg yesterday. She said that back in 1993 Russia and Georgia had signed a bilateral agreement allowing Russian military presence in Georgia; later in 1994 the two countries signed an agreement of friendship and cooperation. The Georgian Parliament ratified this agreement in 1995. Its ratification in the Russian Parliament is still pending. According to Mrs. Burdjanadze, in those documents Russia had promised to help rebuild the Georgian Army, but those promises had not been kept. 'Had Russia helped us, today we would have a well-prepared army not to fight others, but to protect our own interests,' the Speaker added.
