Struggle Against Financing Of Terrorism Must Be "aggressive Enough"

During a meeting in Washington, G-8 finance ministers and chief bankers discussed methods of combating the financing of international terrorism, told journalists Russian Vice-Premier and Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin who had presented a subject-related report at the meeting. It was unanimously agreed that the struggle against the financing of terrorism must be "aggressive enough," said Kudrin. In this connection, the sides are expected to work out special recommendations for countries specifying what laws and measures they can use in this particular case. "The fact is, the existing laws against money-laundering may not be effective enough," explained Kudrin. According to the vice-premier, the sides are supposed to join efforts to secure financial transparency and organise collection and exchange of information between law enforcement authorities. "This task is both complex and complicated," he stressed. Pointing out the importance of information exchange, Kudrin said that participants in the meeting were planning to discuss the subject at the level of the Group of Twenty and attract more international organisations from other countries to this work.
