Airport In Uzbekistan's Termez To Be Transit Point For Un Humanitarian Aid To Afghanistan

The airport in the town of Termez next to the border with Afghanistan will be used exclusively as a transit area on the way of United Nations humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, a UN representative in Uzbekistan told RIA Novosti in a telephone conversation. After being delivered to Termez, the humanitarian aid will be taken across the Amu Darya river on barges to the northern areas of Afghanistan, a UN official said. UN Deputy Secretary General Kendzo Osima said at a press conference in Tashkent Thursday that the Uzbek authorities had given permission to use the river port and Termez airport for delivering humanitarian aid to the Afghan people. According to Mr. Osima, 16,000 tons of aid will be transported via the Termez river port each month. On Thursday, the UN deputy secretary general arrived at Termez. He visited the airport and the river port and left for Tajikistan.
