Georgian Parliament Proposes To Call Emergency Session To Discuss Rustavi-2 Incident

The Georgian parliament has appealed to the president to call an emergency session of the supreme legislative body to discuss the incident around the independent TV company Rustavi-2. This decision was adopted Wednesday at an emergency session of the parliamentary bureau, a RIA Novosti correspondent reports. According to the participants in the session, the Georgian parliament is also to adopt an address to the nation and urge calm among the citizens. The day before, state security officials voiced their intention to search the office of the company suspected of serious tax evasion. The company's leadership has bluntly refuted the allegations, describing the national security ministry's actions as a political persecution. On Tuesday evening, people took to the streets near the TV company's office. The rally is still there. I have an impression that there is a scheme to depose the incumbent authorities and avert legality of the process. The chief goal of the parliament is to avoid involvement into this scenario, said Georgia's parliamentary speaker Zurab Zhvaniya. He deems it necessary to raise the issue of responsibility and at least temporarily suspend the activities of the interior and national security ministers and the prosecutor general.
