The statement from the Department of information and press of the Russian Foreign Ministry received on Saturday by RIA Novosti declared that the Russian Foreign Ministry welcomed adoption by the First committee of the UN General Assembly of the Russian draft resolution "Achievements in the area of informativeness and telecommunications in the context of international security". The draft resolution was adopted by consensus at the meeting of the UN General Assembly committee on 31 October. Back in 1998 the Russian side for the first time proposed to consider within the UN framework the problem of international information security. The Russian Foreign Ministry indicated that the general agreement with the adopted resolution became possible due to its constructive and non-confrontational character which took into account interests of global stability and security, adherence to principles of non-use of force and non-interference into internal affairs, respect for human rights and freedoms". The statement reports that the Russian initiative was not aimed at limitation of a free flow of information. It was filled with the intent to counteract threats to security of states in the area of information, including terrorist threats, attempts to use information technologies for military purposes".
