Tajik President States That If Need Be His Country Will Let USA Use Its Air Bases

DUSHANBE, NOVEMBER 8, 2001. /FROM RIA NOVOSTI CORRESPONDENT NAJMIDIN AZIZOV/--If need be, Tajikistan will "let the United States use its air bases," a RIA Novosti correspondent has quoted the president of Tajikistan as telling journalists on Wednesday. According to Rakhmonov, this question was discussed at his recent meeting with US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld. The President of Tajikistan explained that he meant three airports. Rakhmonov also noted that these air bases are in an awful condition and have no up-to-date navigation systems. At the same time, the president of Tajikistan said that American military experts were now examining the state of these bases. Rakhmonov also stated that Tajikistan backed and would back the laws of the Islamic State of Afghanistan. "We rendered humanitarian aid to the Afghan people, and are now actively helping the world community resolve this problem," he said. Rakhmonov also noted that military field hospitals at which not only Northern Alliance fighters but also civilians of Afghanistan were undergoing medical treatment had long been functioning on Tajik territory.
