Moscow Welcomes Slovak President's First Official Visit To Moscow

Moscow officials believe that Slovak President Rudolf Schuster's first official visit to the Russian Federation will mark an important phase in the ongoing political dialogue between Russia and Slovakia, announced deputy head of the Russian presidential administration Sergei Prikhodko. The program of the visit, which started today and lasts until November 14, includes a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on November 12. According to Prikhodko, Schuster's visit "is a logical part of Russia's dialogue with foreign leaders that followed the September 11 terrorist attacks in the USA and is meant to unite countries' efforts to retaliate against international terrorism." Apart from other issues, Schuster's Moscow talks will focus on the aftermath of the aforementioned terrorist attacks and the launching of the anti-terrorist campaign in Afghanistan, as well as on extra measures to counteract international terrorism, said the Kremlin official, who believes new challenges and threats require an entirely new approach to security measures both in Europe and worldwide. "We are aware of Slovakia's plan to join NATO and expect the issue of the country's future military and political line to be settled in accordance with the all-European task of creating a single security space on the basis of equality of each country on the continent. We also expect Russia's interests to be taken into consideration," stressed Prikhodko, adding that Russia still believed "NATO's enlargement could hardly change the European situation for the better." On the whole, Moscow appreciates the current state of Russian-Slovak relations, said Prikhodko. According to his words, two countries' relationship is free of serious problems. Besides, when it comes to bilateral cooperation and especially economic interaction, Russia and Slovakia have a vast enough experience.
