Storm kills 1,000 in Algeria

The death toll from the monster storm which swept across Algiers at the weekend continues to rise. The latest count is around 1,000.

The storm devastated northern Algeria, and in particular the capital Algiers, on November 9th and 10th. At the latest count, there were around 300 people injured, hundreds missing and around 4,300 homeless.

Adding those already pronounced dead to the figure for the missing, the final toll could be around 1,000 victims of one of the worst storms the country has known in its history. The worst-hit zones were Bab El Oued, Frais Vallon and Triolet.

As more rains are expected in the coming days, the Algerian press has been complaining at the government’s late response to the tragedy.
