Public Council Of Russian-Ukrainian Cooperation To Promote Closer Relationship Between Ukraine And Russia

The goal of the newly created Public Council of Ukrainian-Russian Cooperation is to promote constructive and mutually advantageous cooperation between the independent states of Ukraine and Russia in every way possible. According to the Council's Declaration, its members are resolved to stimulate interstate contacts at an official level as well as in the sphere of interaction between public organisations and private persons. Besides, the Council commits itself to "creating proper conditions for successful economic cooperation and business links" and to promoting, through cooperation between the countries, the "rise and development of civil society and acceptance of European values in both countries." Vyacheslav Igrunov, the State Duma deputy who initiated the creation of the Public Council, asserts that 80% of Ukrainians want to develop a closer relationship with Russia. "The majority of young Ukrainians prefer to speak Russian in everyday life rather than Ukrainian," says the deputy of the link between the two countries. It is probably time to "consider if Russian can get the status of an official language in Ukraine."
