UN Mission On Refugees To Open In Mazar-i-sharif, Northern Afghanistan

UN High Commissioner's office for refugees is considering the possibility of opening its mission in Mazar-i-Sharif in a bid to render assistance directly in Afghan territory. John McAllen, representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Russia, said as much at a RIA Novosti press conference Monday. In his words, the developments in Afghanistan make it likely that nearly 1.5 million Afghan refugees may gather near the CIS southern borders. McAllen stressed that the Russian Emergencies Ministry along with the UN were trying to deliver as much humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan as possible. Our policy is to help the Russian government implement the signed international documents related to refugees' and migrants' rights, the UN official noted.
