Mozambique: malaria epidemic comes with first rains

This figure represents only the region around Maputo, the capital. Olivia Ferreira, Maputo’s Director of Public Health, called the situation “alarming”, claiming that there are not enough beds for this number of patients.

Meanwhile, the country is gearing up for its annual visitation: floods. The National institute for Calamity Management in Mozambique and the World Food Programme have pre-positioned 8,421 tonnes of food in high-risk areas, where 1.6 million people live.

The rainy season in Mozambique is between January and March. In recent years, over a million people have been made homeless by the Zambezi River bursting its banks. The government of Mozambique has presented a 40 million USD emergency programme for appraisal by the international community.
