Deputy Secretary Of Russian Security Council Holds Consultations In India

The Taliban movement, which suffered "political and moral defeat" in Afghanistan, nevertheless preserves enough forces for resuming its activity in other regions of the world. Deputy secretary of the Russian Security Council Oleg Chernov said this to journalists on Wednesday when he summed up the results of two-day consultations with the Indian colleagues on questions of international and regional security. According to him, India and Russia register the Taliban's attempts to transfer their terrorist activity, in particular to that part of the Indian Jammu and Kashmir state which is controlled by Pakistan. Both sides, Chernov pointed out, understand the situation which president of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf is faced with today. For many years Pakistan supported Taliban terrorist organisations and cultivated intolerance to India. Touching upon Musharraf's recent address to the nation, Chernov pointed out that it was made in the right direction. Now, the main task for Islamabad is to really counter trans-border terrorism. As far as the concentration of the Indian troops on the border with Pakistan is concerned, Chernov stated that the Russian side regarded this as a sovereign right of India to take necessary measures to protect its territory.
