Nightlife repressed in Cambodia

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen declared on the country’s state radio station that “If we find out that a karaoke bar is open, we will immediately close it with tanks, knocking it down”.

Last month Hun Sen announced a crack-down on vice, stating that all bars open at night would be closed. The decision caused protests by those who make their living in these bars, however, behind the karaoke there are rings of prostitution and drugs, sexual tourism and traffic in human beings, a problem which is recognised at the United nations level as being much greater than it had previously been thought.
