Russia intends to contribute to the adequate implementation of UN Security Council resolution 1462 on Georgian-Abkhazian settlement, as well as to an efficient and long-term political settlement of the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict, including within the UN, reported the Russian Foreign Ministry on Saturday.
It was noted that resolution 1462 was adopted unanimously by the UN SC last Thursday. The Security Council ruled to extend the Mandate of the United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia /UNOMIG/ up to July 31, 2003.
The resolution is called upon to help the sides focus their efforts in those spheres where progress can be achieved, first of all in confidence-building measures. "It's important that this document clearly confirms the international community's support of the Collective Peacekeeping Forces of the CIS as a key factor of stability in the conflict area," stressed the Russian Foreign Ministry.
