Moscow Concerned About Status of Russian-Speaking Population in Latvia

Representatives of the Russian and Latvian Foreign Ministries discussed vital bilateral issues and ways to solve problems of developing cooperation as part of the consultations in Moscow.

The Russian side focused on the importance to create a favourable political climate for the development of bilateral relations, the press and information department of the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Moscow believes that to create this climate it is necessary to solve the problem of Russia's concern for the status of the Russian-speaking population in Latvia and to take into account Russia's interests in regional security and trade and economic cooperation in view of Latvia's forthcoming joining the European Union and NATO.
