Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi to visit Russia

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi left Japan for Russia on Thursday, January 9th.

The Russian-Japanese summit will be held in Moscow on Friday. The sides are expected to adopt a joint Russian-Japanese plan of action, which is a specific programme for the development of bilateral relations in all spheres.

In an interview with RIA Novosti shortly before his departure, Koizumi compared the plan of action with a pilot's map, which will lead Russia and Japan along the road of fruitful cooperation. Russia and Japan for the first time begin their actions having a common compass and looking into the future, the Japanese prime minister pointed out. He voiced is country's intention of developing cooperation between the two countries in all possible directions, based on the plan of action.

Cooperation between the two countries in stabilising the situation on the Korean Peninsula is an important issue to be discussed at the negotiations. Russia, Koizumi told journalists on Wednesday, maintains friendly relations with North Korea. He expressed the intention to discuss, during the summit, what Russia and Japan can do to settle the North Korean problem.

On January 11th, Koizumi will address the international forum at the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy.

On January 12th, the Japanese prime minister will visit Khabarovsk and then return to Tokyo.
