Russia-China: we can't ignore the challenges facing peace and progress of the humanity

Russian President Vladimir Putin and PRC Chairman Jiang Zemin signed a Joint Declaration on Monday stating that peace and progress of the humanity are facing challenges that can't be ignored. The document mentions that after the events of 11 September 2001 the world has gone through a lot of deep and complex changes. International terrorism and other non-traditional challenges pose a serious threat to peace and security on the planet. Local conflicts are still raging. "Hot spots" of tensions and instability continue to spread. The division between the South and the North is getting deeper.

Vladimir Putin and Jiang Zemin believe that harmonious co-existence among all countries and the world's diversity, and further democratization of international relations contribute to strengthening of global stability and security.

Russia and China stand for emphasizing the leading role of the UN as a major mechanism for ensuring international security and cooperation in multi-polar world, and in that regard they call for increasing the effectiveness of its work, especially, when it comes to the Security Council affairs.

According to the document, the sides consider that in the era of globalization and scientific and technical progress, when the degree of co-dependence among all countries is steadily growing, it's necessary to formulate a comprehensive strategy of sustainable development for the whole world. It should be based on recognition of indivisibility of the global security in all its aspects - military, political, economic, ecological and humanitarian.
