Afghan leaders urge to create an international center to fight illegal drugs

Afghani leadership calls for the creation of an international center that would coordinate the fight against illegal drug trafficking, said Afghani foreign minister Abdullah Abdullo on Friday at a press conference on the results of his talks with Russian foreign minister Igor Ivanov.

According to Afghani minister, the center should be created under the UN aegis "to unite the efforts aimed at preventing and eliminating this evil." Dr. Abdullah believes that Afghani peasants, instead of growing narcotics-related crops, should be given an opportunity to cultivate other agricultural crops. Law enforcement and economic measures must be used more actively to pursue the same goal. "This evil could be eliminated only by using comprehensive measures," underlined Afghani minister.
