Russia has no relation to the attempt on the life of the Turkmen President

The statement made by a spokesman for the official authorities of Turkmenia that there are allegedly political figures in Russia who patronised the organisers of the attempt on the life of the Turkmen President is absolutely absurd, stated Speaker of the Federation Council (the Upper House of the Russian parliament) Sergei Mironov.

His opinion is shared by chairman of the House International Committee Mikhail Margelov. In an interview given to RIA Novosti he said that "the absurdity of this statement is so obvious that there is no sense to comment on it." In his tern, chairman of the Federation Council's committee for security and defence Viktor Ozerov underscored that "the investigation alone can establish and has the right to say officially who is concerned in the attempt on the life of the President of Turkmenistan." At the same time he pointed out that he was worried by the fact that the Turkmen side found it possible to make this statement officially. "It is hardly possible that this could be done without the agreement of Niyazov himself," believes Viktor Ozerov.

It was Serdar Durdyev, the head of the international information department of the presidential apparatus, who made a statement on Tuesday that in Russia "there are political figures who patronised the organisers of the attempt on the life of Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov." In so saying he underscored that his statement had an official character.

At the same time, Serdar Durdyev admitted that he did not have proofs that this attempt on the life of the President was ordered and organised from Russia. Nor did he mention any concrete names of Russian politicians or official persons.
