Copenhagen police intends to ask for prolongation of Zakayev's detention

The Copenhagen police intends to ask for a prolongation of the detention of emissary of the Chechen separatists Akhmed Zakayev at a meeting of the court on Tuesday, RIA Novosti learned by telephone from prosecutor Michael Joergensen, who is in charge of Zakayev's case. He said that in the morning of November 26th the court will meet in Copenhagen to examine the question of Ahmed Zakayev's further detention. The police is for the prolongation of his arrest. However, the decision which judge Lisbeth Christensen will take on the issue will be made known only tomorrow upon the conclusion of the court hearings, noted Joergensen.

The term of Zakayev's detention in custody runs out on Tuesday, November 26th, the decision on which the Copenhagen court took on November 12. The emissary of the Chechen separatists was arrested on October 30 on the basis of material provided by the Russian authorities on Zakayev's complicity in terrorist activity.

On October 31 Moscow sent an official inquiry to Copenhagen on Zakayev's extradition. The Justice Ministry of Denmark, having examined the materials sent at the end of October, in its turn, suggested that Russia send additional information confirming the accusations against Zakayev before November 30.

On November 5 the General Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation handed over to Lene Espersen, Minister of Justice of Denmark, who was in Moscow at that time, additional materials proving Zakayev's complicity in terrorist activity.

The General Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation accuses Ahmed Zakayev of creating a gang of militants which committed acts of terrorism and other crimes on the territory of Russia.
