Russian defence minister heading for US

The three-day visit by Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov to the United States starts on Wednesday. He will take part in the first session of the Russian Consultative Group on Strategic Security which was founded by the decision of the Presidents of the two countries at their Moscow meeting in May this year.

As the minister himself said earlier, at this session the representatives of Russia and the United States "will have to lay the foundation for fulfilling" the provisions of the Treaty on Strategic Offensive Reductions which was signed at that summit in May. According to the minister, the participants in the session will have to concretize the time limits and the mechanisms of the functioning of this treaty.

Sergei Ivanov also plans to discuss with the leaders of the law enforcement bodies and secret services of the United States the possibilities of cooperation between the two countries in the fight against international terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

According to the data of the American side, US President George W. Bush intends to receive Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov and Minister of Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov on September 20. The Russian Foreign Minister is already in the United States, attending the session of the UN General Assembly and will also take part in the session of the Consultative Group.
