Russia urges UN General Assembly to create global system to counteract modern threats

Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov has urged the UN General Assembly to adopt a resolution promoting the soonest creation of a global system to counteract modern threats and challenges.

When addressing on Friday the 57th session of the UN General Assembly, he said that a year before, at the previous session, Russia had summoned the world community to create such a system.

According to the Russian minister, the system at issue shall be global due to the fact that "globalisation allows modern challenges to threaten the whole planet." The system shall also be all-embracing for the reason that each threat of today has an enormous destructive potential. Igor Ivanov emphasised that the global system's composition should be universal since modern threats are targeted against the security and prosperity of the whole international community.

Finally, the Russian foreign minister said, the system to be established shall be an example of international rightfulness for its strength is in its being based on principles and norms of international law, primarily, the UN Charter.
