Astana believes that new legislative amendments do not contradict agreements on the determination of Caspian status

The notion "continental shelf of the Republic of Kazakhstan," introduced into the national legislation, does not violate international agreements on the determination of the legal status of the Caspian Sea. A RIA Novosti correspondent reports that this information is disclosed by the statement made by the Kazakh Foreign Ministry, published on Monday, in Astana.

The document says that the adopted law on the amendments to the border legislation "stipulates the provision that the borders of the continental shelf of the Republic of Kazakhstan are determined by international agreements. This prioritises international agreements over the national legislation." "Kazakhstan adheres to the agreement among five coastal states on the necessity of joint determination of the legal status of the Caspian Sea and is ready to continue the negotiations in an atmosphere of mutual respect and openness both at bilateral and multilateral levels," the statement says.
