White House: US and Russia Are No Longer Strategic Adversaries

The United States and Russia 'are no longer strategic adversaries'. This "new reality', which is reflected in particular in the Russian-American agreement on an intergovernmental council, will allow the development of 'productive, long-term relations between Russia and the Euro-Atlantic community and the US'. According to The New York Times, this change is expressed in the new US National Security Strategy, which has been drawn up by the White House.

In accordance with the Strategy, the US intends to look for 'newly-arising and potential common interests and challenges' in its relations with Russia. 'We are developing the cooperation that already exists in the global war on terrorism,' the document states. However, the Strategy also acknowledges that there is a range of differences of opinion between the two countries, which means that Russia and the US will require time to 'build a long-term relationship as partners'. In addition, the document notes that the opportunities for partnership between the two countries are now 'considerably more significant than over the last few years or even decades'.

Together with the leaders of Russia, India and China, the US intends to develop active cooperation in, amongst other areas, the fight against terrorism.
