Talks on Russian-Japanese Peace Treaty to Resume in Moscow on October 12

According to the Japan Times, the Russian and Japanese Foreign Ministers, Yoriko Kawaguchi and Igor Ivanov, will discuss the possibility of signing a peace treaty between their countries in Moscow on October 12-14. A peace treaty was not signed at the end of World War II due a dispute over the Kuril Islands.

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi is to visit Moscow in January 2001, and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Khristenko will be a co-chairman of the Russian-Japanese trade and economic forum which opens in Moscow on October 14.
