Kazakh President convinced the situation around Iraq should be settled within UN framework

President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev believes that the situation around Iraq "should be settled within the UN framework." He said this at a press conference in Astana on Monday.

Commenting on the attitude of Kazakhstan to a possible US armed action with respect to Iraq, Nazarbayev pointed out that the situation around Iraq differed from the operation in Afghanistan.

"We are of the opinion that it should be settled within the UN framework," Nazarbayev stressed. According to him "all the decisions of the UN Security Council "should be fulfilled and if they are not being fulfilled, the Security Council should make the sides fulfil them.

The President pointed out that Kazakhstan, which voluntarily refused to have a nuclear arsenal, cannot support the efforts of states to create it.

At the same time, the head of Kazakhstan stressed that Iraq's decision to admit UN inspectors "gives ground to believe that the situation will be settled without a war."
