Georgian Ambassador to Russia: There Are No More Terrorists in Pankisi Gorge

The Pankisi Gorge is now free of terrorists and under the complete control of the Georgian military according to Georgian ambassador to Russia Zurab Abashidze, who spoke at a press conference on Thursday. He said that this information had been confirmed by observers of NATO and other international organisations.

However, the ambassador did not rule out the possibility that there are other 'isolated criminals' present in the gorge. Abashidze said that along the Russia-Georgia border there may also be 'isolated groups of between 50 and 80 terrorists who might try to cross the border. There must be careful observation of the border in this area from both the Russian and the Georgian side,' he added.

Furthermore the ambassador said that Georgia is ready to admit 'any OSCE observers as well as any Russian military observers.'
