NATO, Scandinavian and Baltic Warships Conduct Operation to Destroy Old Mines in Baltic Sea

Twenty-two warships from 11 countries of NATO, Scandinavia and the Baltic states - Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, France, Great Britain, Norway, Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia - set out for the Baltic Sea to conduct an operation to destroy mines left there since the time of the First and the Second World Wars.

The operation is held within the framework of the Open Spirit military exercises.

Since 1996 participants in these and other military exercises destroyed 284 mines as well as bombs and other explosive objects.

The operation will last till October 27.
