US airlines have suffered the losses of over $1.4 billion on January 1-6 in connection with unusually cold weather in the United States. As many as 19,000 flights had to be canceled due to anomalous cold, the Los Angeles Times wrote.

Over 76,000 flights had been delayed. The delays mostly affected Detroit, New Jersey, Chicago, Cleveland and Atlanta. The weather thus affected not less than 8 million passengers. The travelers thus incurred losses of $970,000 as they had to pay for unscheduled lunches and hotel rooms.

On January 7th, nearly 5,000 flights had to be delayed because of the cold. Arctic weather in the United States has killed at least 16 people, mostly in car accidents
