Train line stopped by man-eating vultures

Workers constructing the only train line which links Tibet with China have to stop their machines every time there is a traditional Tibetan funeral, in which the human body is thrown to the vultures to increase its karma, so as not to frighten off the “sacred eagles”.

Lhasang Gumco, the organiser of the traditional Tibetan funeral in the village of Zhamu, declared that “The sacred eagles come to feed at the same time every day”. The official Chinese news agency, Xinhua, has confirmed that the rail construction workers stop their work at feeding time, so as to respect local traditions.

In the traditional Tibetan funeral, the body is cut up into pieces, its bones smashed, and the human flesh is mixed with butter, flour, eggs and herbs, so make it a more tasty dish for the vultures.
