Japan remembers victims of devastating tsunami

 

Japan holds mourning ceremonies in memory of the victims of the devastating earthquake that occurred on 11 March 2011.

Two years ago, a strong earthquake in the Pacific and subsequent tsunami waves of up to 40 meters high led to considerable destruction in the north-east coast of Japan. According to official reports, 15,881 people were killed as a result of the natural disaster. As many as 2,668 are still listed as missing.

The disaster caused an accident on Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant , which resulted in the contamination of large areas with radioactive substances.

The tragedy became the largest one in the country's post-war history. Mourning ceremonies in memory of the victims of disaster are held across the country today, March 11, 2013. Japan will mark two days of the national tragedy during the whole week.
